Hey everyone, having an issue with my bike and would like some input/suggestions.
I have a '96 fourtrax 300 4x4 which sat for almost a year. I couldn't get it started with a new battery, so I took apart the carburetor and gave it a good cleaning. Popped it back in and then it started with some choke help of course.
I then took for a ride down the road and noticed some throttle issues - basically seemed like it was starving for gas as I switched gears, which I was not getting the old power thrust I used to. I also noticed a different smell - not quite clutch burn though. Also, if I did not stay in motion, the motor would kill.
Two things to note regarding the carburetor cleaning:
1. When I removed the jets, I removed the idle mixture screw (pilot screw) without noting its original position, on accident. So I decided to place it back not too tight nor too loose.
2. I purchased one of those little $20 packets which contains a few replacement parts (ie: o ring, jets, springs and washers)
I noticed that when I removed my main jet, there was no emulsion tube in the hole (like stated in the instructions I was following) This tube was however in my replacement packet but would not fit below the main jet if I tried to re-install, so I left it out.
Any of you Honda gurus out there have any ideas/suggestions for this not so tech savvy bike owner? Would be much appreciated.

D-Ray does a great job detailing the carb rebuild in a 300. When rebuilding the carb, I'd suggest setting the mixture screw at whatever the standard is, something like 1 3/4 turns out from lightly seated, and go from there. You'll want to verify that number to be sure it is correct. D-Ray also does a great job showing how to set the mixture screw once you get it running.
If the emulsion tube doesn't fit, make sure it's going in the correct hole (that's what she said) and that there isn't already something in there (she might have said that too). Sounds like the original emulsion tube might still be in there.

Take a close look at the carbs diagram, and make certain that the tiny washers are in place under the needle clip as well as on the fuel screw above the tiny o ring, screw it in until it lightly seats, back it out 2.5 full turns to get it in the ballpark, and to run well enough to set the fuel screw to highest smooth rpms, then turning idle back down using idle knob on side of carb...

Also,Donnie/D Ray has a plethora of well thought out videos on his channel in youtube showing how to do most anything on the old 300s,and there are free emanuals in here covering the 300s if you need pictures, and text to help do anything..

Thanks to all. Actually watched that video as well. However, that emulsion tube was never in there, I was in the right hole, I am sure. It simply would not fit with the main jet back in place. Deeperinthabush, is the knob you are talking about the one which is hand tightened with an elongated shaft and spring around it? I thought that was throttle adjustment?

I wound up adjusting the pilot screw and the knob on the side to make the bike idle fine. However, when I went to put it in gear, it sounded like it was starving for gas and then died. Thoughts?
